Follow-UpPaul Davis Re: [Jack-Devel] What is Freewheel
I was trying to study the way Jack sever works. I was unable to understand
what Freewheel is. Let me more specific. I added some debugging logs to the
Jack code to try and understand how exaclty the RT threads(which execute the
process callback) are woken up when its time for them to run. The test
program I tried was jack_simple_client. My logs capture the struct
JackClientTiming data for all active clients.

So after launching the jackd I see the following logs for a while

[2]KK:JackAudioDriver::ProcessAsync cycle[601] <--- cycle number, increments
for every invocation of ProcessAsync in JackAudioDriver.cpp
[2]====================================================
[2]Client[0] name[system] fStatus[Triggered]
[2]SignalledAt[672413455674] AwakeAt[0] FinishedAt[672413455674]
[2]---------------------------------------------------
[2]Client[1] name[freewheel] fStatus[Triggered]
[2]SignalledAt[672413455679] AwakeAt[0] FinishedAt[672413455679]
[2]---------------------------------------------------

once the jack_simple_client is added, i start to see the following

[2]KK:JackAudioDriver::ProcessAsync cycle[617]
[2]====================================================
[2]Client[0] name[system] fStatus[Triggered]
[2]SignalledAt[672413548645] AwakeAt[0] FinishedAt[672413548645]
[2]---------------------------------------------------
[2]Client[1] name[freewheel] fStatus[Triggered]
[2]SignalledAt[672413548918] AwakeAt[0] FinishedAt[672413548658]
[2]---------------------------------------------------
[2]Client[2] name[jack_simple_client] fStatus[Finished]
[2]SignalledAt[672413548658] AwakeAt[672413548851] FinishedAt[672413548918]
[2]---------------------------------------------------

In my understanding the cleint named "system" is the audio driver.
The jack_simple_client appears as cleint no.2.

What exactly is the freewheel here ? What is its purpose ?
