That explains a lot.  Traditionally I've been in the habit of decompressing such files under Linux (to a shared FAT32 drive) and then rebooting into Windows !!

I think the OP has raised a valid point though.  Very few of the popular Windows archivers seem to recognise the ".tgz" extension.  ".zip" is far and away the most popular archive format for Windows users.  It does seem a bit odd to be distributing archive files that most of them won't know how to open.
